Sitting down in an over-sized chair that goes up and down and swings around by the whim of someone else suddenly makes you realize that you have no control of the situation. Your feet won't even touch the floor, and if you decide to move your head for a look at yourself in the mirror, it gets pushed down by a firm hand. This movement confirms that you have no control! Now you know.
So you're expected to sit up straight, be still, hold your head just right, relax and have confidence in the person who keeps pushing your head around and won't let you see what's happening to YOUR hair. Relax? No way! The sound of the scissors seems like thunder in your ears and you think, "If I could just see how much they're cutting, I'd be O.K."
Would you jump out of the chair if you saw a slip of the scissors? Probably not. Most of us would sit there immobilized and let them finish the haircut. Only after we're safely at home does the screaming and sobbing happen.
I know this scene all too well. I had years of haircutting "mishaps" because I'm so attached to my long hair. I like trims; one-quarter to one-half inch at a time .... rather than four to six.
Twice in my life I actually did jump out of the chair screaming. I had to sit back down for the finish but the drama of it all felt wonderful! The hairdresser was a nervous wreck afterward, but at least my hair was cut evenly .... although much too short.
It is a blessing to have an understanding with the person who is cutting your hair. You can relax and enjoy the experience when you know you have been heard and will be getting what you asked for; whether that is a micro-trim or an entirely new look.
We discussed the fact that she needed a good haircut. It had been a long time since her last one. In addition, her hair has a tendency to frizz due to the coloring, heat styling, and slight wave pattern.
Together we decided to first press a deep conditioning oil treatment into the hair shaft, follow that with a protein mask to address the frizz
issue and then last, cut the ends about an inch.
She loved the results! She said,
"My hair feels wonderful!! Like silk!! It's so smooth!! Look how beautiful it moves!!"
THAT WAS FUN!! GS
